ABOUT EARTH SCIENCES

Earth Sciences (SES) is a new School within the Faculty of Science. Specialist academic advice relating to courses delivered by Earth Sciences is provided by academic advisers within the School and at the Faculty.

Earth Sciences provides professional education for those who seek careers in:

• mineral exploration or mine geology;
• fossil fuel exploration or mine geology;
• exploration geophysics;
• environmental geoscience and surface processes;
• hydrogeology;
• oceanography and marine geology;
• paleontology and stratigraphy;
• geochemistry and mineralogy;
• earthquake seismology and risk assessment.

Facilities & Resources
Earth Sciences has 7 specialised laboratories with modern computer facilities provides advanced analytical capabilities for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, environmental chemistry, toxicology as well as medical and forensic research:

Argon Geochronology Laboratory
Exploration Geophysics Laboratory
Geochemistry Laboratory
Sample Preparation Laboratory
Stable Isotope Laboratory

The laboratories support a wide range of research activities undertaken by academic staff, post doctoral research fellows, as well as PhD and honours students. The facility is supported by two full time research officers.

Research is also supported by specialised laboratories for petrology, sedimentology, palynology, paleontology, ICP-OES and atomic absorption analysis, organic petrology, and seismic processing. Facilities are available for mineral separation and the production of thin and polished sections.

Research fields include: crustal evolution and metallogeny, mantle geochemistry, igneous petrology, palaeobiology, isotope sedimentology, palæoclimatology, palæoceanography and environmental chemistry.

We also have two undergraduate teaching/computer laboratories, and two (2) postgraduate student computer laboratories.

Library
The Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library incorporates one of the best Earth Science libraries in the southern hemisphere with particular strengths in geology of all parts of the world, paleontology, economic geology, geochemistry, regional geology, and seismology.

Careers
The range of positions available to qualified geologists and geophysicists is exceedingly wide. The main areas of employment are with exploration, mining, coal and oil companies and geological, geophysical, engineering and environmental consultants and contractors. Many of the larger companies offer further training and career opportunities overseas as well as in Australia. Some of the diverse careers that our graduates enjoy are:

• Research and Development Geophysicist
• Urban Geoscientist
• Mine Geologist
• Exploration Geoscientist
• Geological Survey Geologist
• Corporate Finance Manager
• Well-site Geologist
• Petroleum Exploration Geologist

Opportunities in research and/or teaching are offered in universities, museums, and research institutions, including CSIRO, the Australian Geological Survey Organization, State geological surveys, and some of the larger exploration companies. Those with interests in applying the earth sciences to national economic or social needs may find employment in Federal and State Government departments concerned with such matters as environmental studies, earthquake risk assessment, water supply and power generation, beach protection, main roads and urban studies, to name a few.
