Background

Earth Sciences at UQ invites you to attend our information day for postgraduate students from Australia and New Zealand. You will travel to Brisbane for Thursday 20th September 2007 to meet the staff and students within Earth Sciences, and to discuss projects with potential supervisors. The University will provide flights and accommodation for the weekend, and you are encouraged to make the most of your time in Brisbane, Australia's most liveable city.

Funding for postgraduate study can be discussed with Earth Sciences faculty on the day. Applicants may also wish to consult the University's information about scholarships for research students, which can be found here.

Research/Facilities

Major research areas include:

  Geochemistry, geochronology and isotope systems
    geochronology/thermochronology, trace element and stable isotope geochemistry
  Environmental and marine earth science
    environmental geochemistry, surficial processes, landscape evolution, hydrogeology, marine geology and geochemistry, coral reef geobiology, paleoclimatology and global change, paleoecology
  Fossil fuels, ore geology and resource exploration
    ore geology and mineralogy, coal geology, coalbed methane, geosequestration, exploration geophysics
  Crustal studies and tectonics
    petrology and crustal evolution, magmatic processes and volcanology, structural geology, geodynamics

Earth Sciences has 6 specialised laboratories as well as several associated research centres, including:

  Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM)
  Centre for Marine Studies (CMS)
  Australian Computational Earth Systems Simulator (ACcESS) which includes the Queensland University Advanced Centre for Earthquake Studies (QUAKES)
  Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI)
