RHD Candidature Progression & Development Milestones

All research higher degree (RHD) students (PhD and MPhil) are required to complete each milestone.
Each milestone has three components:
  • Written work submitted in the required format by the candidate
  • Oral presentation by the candidate
  • An interview/dialogue with the candidate

  • Candidature progression and development milestones provide a structured process for documenting and verifying progress towards the timely completion of a RHD candidate's research project and high quality thesis

A. PhD Candidates: Milestone Requirements
  1. Milestone 1: Confirmation
    Full-time students: 12 months after commencement
    Part-time students: Within 24 months of commencement

  2. Milestone 2: Mid-Candidature Review
    Full-time students: Approximately 1 year after confirmation
    Part-time students: Within 24 months of confirmation

  3. Milestone 3: Thesis Review
    Full-time students: 12 months after Milestone 2, or 3 months before the intended submission date (whichever is sooner)
    Part-time students: Within 24 months of Milestone 2, or 6 months before the intended submission date (whichever is sooner)

B. MPhil Candidates: Milestone Requirements
  1. Milestone 1: Confirmation
    Full-time students: Between 6 and 9 months after commencement
    Part-time students: Within 18 months of commencement

  2. Milestone 2: Mid-Candidature Review
    Full-time students: Between 12 and 15 months of candidature
    Part-time students: Within 30 months of candidature

  3. Milestone 3: Thesis Review
    Full-time students: 6 to 9 months after Milestone 2, or 2 months before the intended submission date (whichever is sooner)
    Part-time students: Within 18 months of Milestone 2, or 4 months before the intended submission date (whichever is sooner)
